FRACKSYLUMELLE

Fracksylumelle, 2023 8’ high vinyl printed mural applied to construction fencing, 244 3rd Avenue Brooklyn.  The mural extends from the corner of Union Street to Sackett Street.  Commissioned by Arts Gowanus for the Charney Companies and Tavros Holdings.

The mural is in part inspired by Alain LeFoll’s illustrations for The Very Obliging Flowers, a childrens' book published in 1969, by Claude Roy. The book tells the story of two children living in a high-rise development, who are given magic seeds to plant by a mysterious visitor. The seeds grow into enormous animated flowers which bring fun and friendship into their anodyne surroundings.

The building under construction shows every sign of being the opposite of the slab-like structures in the book. My choice of imagery is meant instead to invoke the promise of humanized architecture.

The installation of Fracksylumelle in the Summer of 2023, with the assistance of Jin Kim and Ryan O'Connor.
